Today, I got a Christmas Card from the owner of our company. The message at the bottom puzzled me, so I thought I would post the text of the greeting card to see if anyone can help me understand.

May the Christ Consciousness “catch you” in unexpected ways this holiday and bring you great joy!

christ consciousnessI have posted an artist’s rendition of the Christ Consciousness. This was not the image that came with the card, but rather an image courtesy of Google Images.

What do you think is the Christ Consciousness?

  1. After some quick internet research, Christ Consciousness seems to be a part of the New Age/New Thought brand of spiritualism where humans are capable of finding “God” within themselves and attaining a higher consciousness — similar to Yoga, Buddhism, Eckhart Tolle, etc.

I had not heard of this particular brand of spiritualism before. Interesting that the owner of your company is including this message for all the employees.

  2. Your observations are spot on. The New Age, New Spirituality movement has transcended all religions so that every brand of spirituality is a way to connect with God. Jesus no longer becomes the way, but rather one of the many ways.

I found a youtube video posted on a blog that interviews Oprah and Eckhart Toll where they describe the Christ Consciousness.

Basically, it’s a designer spirituality. It’s finding what you like in a spiritual life (the jewels) and stringing together your own necklace.

Oprah came to a realization when she was in her late 20’s that there were attributes of God that didn’t jive with her. For instance, that God is jealous. Perhaps, since she didn’t like that jewel, she excluded it from her necklace.

If you watch the video, she makes a rather astute point about how she believes that Jesus didn’t come to start Christianity. She is 100% right. Jesus came with a “Kingdom” announcement (inaugurating the rule and reign of God), not an intent to start a new religion. It’s so sad to see that her very correct observation led to rather strange outcome (Christ Consciousness).

I hope that someone can sit down with Oprah one day and tell her the story of Jesus from a Kingdom perspective.
